Which is the best addition to your home — pool or basement?
“We basically have enough money to finish our basement and put in a pool or keep the basement unfinished and no pool and do an addition. What do you think is a better return on investment?”
When deciding between adding a pool or a basement to your home, consider factors like your budget, climate, and lifestyle.
A pool can offer relaxation and entertainment but requires ongoing maintenance and may not be usable year-round.

On the other hand, a basement adds valuable indoor space for storage, recreation, or additional living areas, potentially increasing property value.

“If you can actually get a pool in, good on you because I heard that there’s like a two year waiting list to get a pool right now. The easy answer is to get a pool and finish your basement because it’s a lot easier to guess the price of that.
Whereas if you’re doing an addition and you think it’s a $300,000 addition, it ends up being like $515 ,000 addition and maybe you don’t have enough money to finish it or what have you, there’s just a lot more unknown costs or added costs or suddenly drywall goes up crazy prices or your contractor screws you and you have to get a new one and blah, blah.
It’s just a lot safer budget wise to finish your basement and just put in a pool and obviously with COVID pools are super, super popular. If you were planning on selling it, that is more popular than an addition.
But to be honest, I would just have a realtor do the numbers for you…The easy answer is just to get a pool and finish your basement because you’re less likely to go over budget.”
Assessing the pros and cons of each option, consulting with professionals, and considering the specific characteristics of your property will help you make an informed decision that enhances your living experience and adds value to your home. Whether you prioritize outdoor recreation and entertainment or indoor versatility and functionality, both pools and basements offer opportunities to customize your space and create a home that reflects your lifestyle and aspirations.
